Professor Robert Allen Recognized for Short Story

Hiwassee College’s Dr. Robert Allen was one of three local writers to win the K-Town Caper Contest for the best Guy Noir-style gumshoe detective adventure story. Each winner received two tickets to “A Prairie Home Companion’s The America the Beautiful Tour” and dinner with the cast and Garrison Keillor before the show at the historic Tennessee Theatre in Knoxville August 13.

“The challenge was to write a version of the Guy Noir skits that Keillor does,” said Dr. Allen. “I was one of three people to win two tickets to the show and dinner with Keillor. We had a very pleasant, informal buffet meal downstairs in the theater. We chatted about religion and politics—and poetry.  Keillor had nothing of the celebrity about him—just a smart, modest guy, very easy to talk to.  The show itself was great. It ran nearly three hours; I understand it will be broadcast later in the Fall.”

Two dozen entries were submitted to the contest, which was sponsored by WUOT-Knoxville in partnership with the Historic Tennessee Theatre and AC Entertainment. You can read a copy of Dr. Allen’s story by following this link.
