Dear New and Returning Tigers,

On behalf of the Administration, Faculty, and Staff of Hiwassee College, welcome back to campus for the 2017/2018 academic year! The weeks leading up to the start of classes on August 21st are going to be busy and exciting… but nowhere near as exciting as August 21st itself. For those of you who don’t yet know, a total eclipse of the sun will occur, and the “path of totality” will pass directly over the Hiwassee Quad at around 2:30 PM. This will be an auspicious, once-in-a-lifetime experience for those here. We will have special programming, as well as safety glasses whereby you may safely experience one of the most spectacular sights the natural world has to offer.  Please do everything possible to be on campus as early as possible, as we anticipate a few hundred thousand people to be in the area for the eclipse: traffic is bound to be difficult, and hotels are booked out for hundreds of miles in either direction.  Advance information on the eclipse may be found at https://eclipse2017.nasa.gov/

At Hiwassee College, we have many improvements completed, planned and in progress for the Hiwassee campus and its students, and some new people to introduce.  These improvements involve student housing, financial aid processing, public programs, student activities and counseling. We are also close to announcing the construction schedule for the head-to-toe renovation of Brock Hall and the Johnston-Hardwick library. We will be going over these items in detail in our welcome program on August 21st  – just before being “overshadowed” by events in the sky.

The faculty and athletic staff are also busily making plans for exciting times in our classrooms and athletic venues. Our athletic teams are already getting ready for practice – if not already actively training and practicing. Student affairs, as well as our new Chaplain are working up programming that will bring fun, excitement, learning and reflective balance to the lives of our busy students. In short, this fall is shaping up to be a memorable one.

By all means, please enjoy the remainder of your leisurely summer – things are going to be busy for all Hiwassee Tigers, very soon. We have exciting work to do!

Again, welcome!
